Shoot Five

In this lesson I took photographs to tell the story of fashion. I took these photographs in the studio and used a grey background with shadowy lighting to create the shadows on the face.

If I was to do this lesson again I would take more long shot photographs to show all of the model as I feel having long shots show the story of fashion in a better way. However when I tried this shadows were shown on the background which I did not like. Therefore I would try with a different background and see if the shadows still form.

This photograph shows different shadows and tones on the face. For this photograph I used a grey background because what the model was wearing and her hair colour looked the best on the grey coloured background. I really liked the lighting that I used for this photo as it shows a variety of soft tones in the face. If I was to take this photograph again I would take a full length shot but trying to keep the same tones on the face.

In this photograph I have also used a grey background but with brighter lighting to create a different atmosphere. I took this photo slightly from the left hand side as I felt it looked better than taking it directly in front of the model. I like the position of the model in this photo as I think its a natural pose. If I was to take this photograph again I would get the whole of the models legs in the photo to see which out of the two looks better.

Discussion

Story Telling

The theme of Story Telling can be shown through photography in a variety of ways.
For example:

  • Fairy Tales
  • Personal Stories
  • Fashion
  • life Cycles
  • Recovery Stories
  • Nature
  • Illustrating Books
  • Fiction
  • Non-fiction

Story telling is a way of expressing past events or emissions that have taken place in the past. These stories can either be fiction or non-fiction. I believe that Story Telling is very effective when used in photography as I feel that there is a story behind every photograph.
For example: a single photograph from the war tells a whole story about that specific moment/point in time.

Story telling can also be shown through nature and natural world because that represents the life cycle which is showing and telling a story. For example the life cycle of nature and the life cycle of natural world-Growing old.
Another way of telling a story is by showing someone's personal story or recovery. These stories then become a lot more personal and could effect people in a number of different ways. They also have a lot more reason behind the photographs. Story Telling also allows viewers to connect with the images because the stories of the photographs or the stories behind the photographs may relate to them.

When looking at photographs that relate to the theme of Story telling, that I have chosen for this unit, I have come up with a number of ideas for shoots that I would like to do. For example the picture above that shows anorexia has influenced me and given me an idea for a shoot related to anorexia. Also I have looked at the life cycle of nature and humans, in my own way I would like to show a life cycle through my pictures. A story can also be told through a single picture on its own as every photograph has a story behind it. For example a portrait can tell the story of the models emotions or personality.

Shoot Four

In this lesson I took photographs of flowers in the studio. These photographs were to show the story of a flowers life cycle.

If I was going to do this lesson again I would take full length photographs of the the flowers in a vase as I feel this would make my images look a lot better and more professional. I would also change the background to black as when editing my photos from this lesson I felt that the black background looked better.

This image shows the flowers fully grown with all its petals. The darkness of the background in this image makes the colours of the flowers stand out and it makes the outline of the flowers look a lot sharper. In this photograph i used fairly dark lighting and a dark navy blue background. However if I was to do this image again I would choose to use a black background as I feel this looks better. Therefore I edited this image to make the background darker/black.

The next photograph shows how I edited some of the pictures together as a sequence in order to show the life cycle story of the flowers. Again I used dark lighting and a blue background but edited them so the background looked blue. If I was to take these images again I would take the photos from different angles and then put them all together to see what one looks better.

Shoot Three

In this lesson I took pictures to show the story of different stereotypes within society. I did this by taking pictures of different people and them putting them together.

If I was to do this lesson again I would take more pictures of different people because I only took pictures of three different people and I feel that I need more of a variety to really show the different stereotypes within the society as there are so many.

In this image I edited two separate together by using one half of each of the two photographs. For this photograph I used a grey background with white quite bright lighting. I feel that this affected the background and didn't really make the background look as grey as it was. Therefore if I was to take this image again I would either change the background or make the lighting slightly darker to make it look grey.

For this image I also used a grey background and I also used two images and put them together as one. However when putting these two images together I merged them and then make the model on the right hand side in less focus than the model to the left. If I was to take both of these photographs again I would do the same as the above by either change the background or making the lighting slightly darker to make sure the background is the right colour grey and doesn't look off grey.

Shoot Two

In todays lesson I took photographs in the studio to link to my project of Story Telling. My photographs that I took were showing someone's story of anorexia.

If I was going to do this lesson again I would experiment with the different type of lighting to create different atmospheres and effects. This is due to a lot of my images be quite dark before they were edited. However once edited I really like how the lighting effected the photographs.

In a lot of my photographs I included a tape measure to cover the models mouth. This was to represent the tape measure as a replacement of food. For example this image to the left. In this image I used dark lighting and focused on just having close ups of the face. If I was to take this photograph again I would take it from a more wide variety of angles so I had more images to choose from. I would also experiment with another type of light, although I really liked the lighting I used it was an over head light and it made the models eyes quite red looking.

In this photograph I stuck a sticker label onto the models mouth saying "I wont eat". This was to show what anorexia does to people, it makes you not want to eat in oder to be skinny. Therefore I wanted this sticker to resemble that. I really like the angle that this photograph was taken at. I also really like the image when it is edited black and white as I feel this creates the whole atmosphere of sadness and loneliness. If I was to take this image again I would just try to focus more on the composition of the image and not include so much of the background.

shoot One

In this lesson I took photos on location to show someone's morning routine of making a cup of tea. I then edited them to put them into a sequence of patters to show them making the tea step by step.

If I was to do this lesson again I would take the photographs in the studio rather than on location as I feel that the use of lighting in the studio would make my photographs look a lot better. I would also experiment with taking the photos from a high angle.

In this photograph I have captured the movement of poring the hot water into a mug. The lighting of this image is quite light however its against a dark background. I like the angle of this image as it is from directly in from of the objects in the photograph. If I was to take this photo again I would try to take it as a close up as I feel too much background is involved in the photo.

This next image shows a higher angle shot so you can see the image from a different perspective. In these images I used slightly darker lighting than the photograph above. If I was to do this sequence again I would take the pictures in the studio as I feel that the images would have come out in a much better quality than this image.

Image Bank- Story Telling

In this image it is showing a boy growing older. This is representing the life cycle of growing old. The lighting used in this image is very bright but gloomy. This picture is four separate images that have been emerged together in order to create the effect of showing the boy to be getting older and older in each picture. This photograph links to my project of story telling because it is telling a story about growing old over time. I like this photograph as I think it is very interesting and it shows that the image has a lot of thought behind it. This photograph could influence my work as I think this is a very good way of telling a story. However I feel this would be very hard as I do not have the models to take the separate pictures of the boys/men at different ages.

This image shows the fairy tale Alice in Wonderland however it is underwater photography known as Alice in Waterland. I really like this image because it uses a lot of imagination and puts the photographers on twist to Alice in Wonderland. This photo shows quite bright lighting directly on to the model in the photograph. I would really like to re create this image in my own way.

This image shows the fairy tale of Snow White. from looking at the image it shows natural lighting is used. This photograph has also been taken on location as shown from the background. This image links to the project of story telling because it is a still photograph from a scene of snow White.

This photograph shows a sequence of someone making a cup of tea. This therefore could show someone's story in the morning when they make a cup of tea or on the other hand this could be the story of someone's day routine. Fairly dark grey lighting is used in all of the images as you can tell from looking at the images because the backgrounds are all the same colour.

In this photograph it is showing the story of a leaves life cycle from growing to dying. This is shown through the leaves getting bigger and greener and then turing yellow and getting smaller again. These photographs are set out in a sequence. The background is white for all of the images and the lighting used is fairly bright.

This image is a close up of a male model expressing his emotions. This is a way of telling a story as all stories are told through emotions. The background used in this image is black and the lighting looks dark. However this is hard to tell as the image has been made black and white. The image being in black and white create the angry atmosphere to represent the emotion he is showing.

This image is very similar to the life cycle of the leaves. However this image is showing the life cycle of a flower. This image is a drawing not a photograph but I feel this drawing could influence my work and give me ideas. The background used for this image is a white/light grey background.

This photograph represents the story of pregnancy. The photograph has been edited black and white and then there is the models reflection in the mirror behind her. The model herself is in focus but the reflection is not. This photograph links to the project of story telling because it shows the story of having a baby/being pregnant.

This photograph shows the story of fashion through the years and how it has changed. Some of the images are black and white and others are in colour. The images are taken in a studio.

This photograph links to story telling because it has a story behind the picture. For example this could show a story of life in war or life as a African American slave. Therefore this image on its own tells a story. The photograph has been edited black and white to create the scared and upsetting atmosphere.

This image shows a photograph that has been taken of a model and then been animated by adding the birds in order to make it look like the photo is from a book. the lighting in this image is very bright and the background is white/light grey.
This image shows the story of fashion from the different parts/countries around the world. This picture uses a grey background and fairly bright lighting. the angle of this photo has been taken from directly in front but the model is slightly turned to the right.

This photo shows the fairy tale wizard of Oz. This image relates to story telling because you could re create scenes from this movie and photograph them in order to show a story and create a story line to the images.

This image could show the story of what smoking does to your body and how it affects the way you look. This image is a close up of an elderly women. This allows you to see the cigarette and the wrinkles of the women's face. Therefore this image could tell a story of smoking as it represent the awareness of smoking.

This image tells the story of war. This image could also tell the story of someone's experience while at war. This image is black and white and the smoke at the background is a very faint white.
In this photo it seems that the photograph of the girl has been taken blowing bubbles and then placed onto another background. This photograph shows the story of what the girl is thinking or imagining about when this photo was taken. The objects that she is thinking about are edited onto the image. The lighting used for the photograph of the little girl is fairly light and slightly off black and white looking. This photo is a very interesting and different way of telling a story.

This image shows a story because it has a number of pictures/drawings and then it is telling a story underneath the images. This is know as a storyboard. This is an interesting and different way of telling a story.

This image shows a number of still drawings and then speech bubbles have been used in order to create the story in a comic formate. This would be a good way to tell a story as it would have information to read. I could do this by taking still photographs and then adding speech into the images.

This image shows a story through age. The photo on the left shows the two boys of a younger age and then the picture on the right shows them a lot older. This tells a story of growing up.

In this photograph there is a sequence of a variety of different photos. The photos have been arranged in a film tape layout. This creates a affect of the pictures telling a story through a film/as a film.

This image shows the older generation telling the younger generation a story of the past/past events. The elderly man being at a higher level makes the picture more affective as you can see the children are looking up to him.

This photograph is also a sequence that has been put together from a women's wedding day. This photo is telling the a story of a wedding day from the brides perspective.

This image tells a story of the different pathways of life. There is depth of filed used in this image because the main part of the image at the front is in focus and the objects in the background are a blur. This photo has been taken from a low angle.

This image tells a story of a book coming to life. The pages have been cut out to make it look like characters/objects are coming out of the book.

Image bank- Anorexia

 Idea two

I have chosen to look further into the idea about anorexia/telling a story by showing someones recovery story. I like this idea because I feel that it will give me a wider variety of what I can photograph. I also like this idea because I think it gives the photographs more meaning as it becomes a personal story.

The first photograph is a close up that could have a number of meanings behind it. For example: the photograph could show that the girl has replaced food with constant fought of weight and the way she looks/symbolised by the tape measure.

This second image uses a grey effect to make the girl in the image look drained. Emotions are also shown in the photo through the writing on her neck and arms. This allows the viewers to understand and know how the girl is feeling. A tape measure is also used in this image to show the same feeling of constant worry about weight and the way you have to or should look.

The image to the right shows a reflection in the mirror. In this reflection you can see a women's figure of a very healthy/normal size. However you can see that the girl is holding/pinching her skin/fat. This photo again shows the worry of being over weight.

This photograph shows someone measuring their waist with a tape measure which shows how society and stereotypes effect you and make you believe that you have to be a certain way/ skinny and not over weight.

This image shows what anorexia does to you mentally and physically because mentally it affects you by believe that you are still over weight and then physically it makes you extremely underweight and unhealthy. This image shows the reflection in the mirror of the girl thinking she is fat/over weight and then in reality she is very underweight/skinny

In this photograph you can see a sticker/label stuck to the girls mouth saying 'I won't eat" this shows that she is preventing herself from eating and the sticker is symbolising this. The same grey effect is used in this image the same as one of the images above. The girl looking towards the camera makes the image a lot more effective because it allows the viewers to connect with her emotions.

In this image you can see that a scene from a story has been re created to tell the story of 'Little red riding hood'. You can identify this because of the red cape the model is wearing. The lighting in this image is quite dusk and doll, this makes the red in the image stand out because the other colours are not as bright.
